I wonder about cabbage and what the maximum degree of temperature it can take during its growth and at what point of its maturity high heat affects it and cause it not to head up, like it didn't this year? I wonder if the Brussels sprouts, transplanted the end of May, will change their flavor from bitter to sweet in September? I wonder what's eating the soybeans. I wonder what's starting to eat the newly ripening tomatoes? I wonder if we will have enough time to get any Seminole pumpkins off the vine before frost? I wonder, I wonder, I wonder.
Wondering is a big part of my year every year. Just when I think I know the answer there will be a slight change in circumstances that blows my theory apart and then I Google, sometimes with success. Talking to another grower can help too or it can bring on many more questions
Chickens that have been ordered from our number 4 batch will be ready next Thursday, August 25 after 4:30pm.
I told some of you about a foraged wrap I wanted to create from the wonderful weeds in the fields. Two weeks ago I came up with the wrap contents while I was working in the field and decided to make it that evening for my family. Success!! So then I decided to make it at the farmers market and it was well received, so here is the creative contents of The Gravel Knolls Farm Foraged Weed Wrap ...
2 cups coarse chopped purslane, lambs quarter, pig weed tops, Swiss chard
Saute in olive until wilted
1 8 inch flour wrap
Place off center of wrap and sprinkle on top of greens...
toasted sliced almonds
2 Tbsp zucchini relish, Recipe on July 19 blog
Sprinkle crumbled feta cheese
Drizzle freshly made cucumber dressing: 2 cucumbers, 1 cup yogurt. Process until smooth. Add herbs, garlic and salt to taste
Fold bottom up. Fold over each side, holding in the contents as well as possible ( I leave the top open) and fry in a pan with olive oil on top and bottom until brown and crispy.
You are more than welcome to come and forage during your pick up. I'll point you in a weedy direction where the pickin' is easy. If you try it- let me know how you like it.
The pick up this week will be small again. There will be some lettuce, tomatoes, and summer squash, possibly some fingerling potatoes. It's not a great potato season for any of the growers around here. I wonder why. The u-pic herbs will be available on Wednesday and Thursday. The u-pic okra and cherry tomatoes will be available for the Thursday CSA. Thanks, See you on the farm. Linda
