Happy Mothers Day

 Hey CSA members,
Sorry I have been so quiet lately. My schedule has been out of whack.
All that have sent in or dropped off an application and fee for this year's CSA is a member. Keep watching this site for updates on harvest.

Just finished my description of the tomato varieties for this year. Have a look and see if you don't agree that they all make your mouth water when you read.

EARLY GIRL TOMATO
Early Girl produces bright red, meaty tomatoes with incredible flavor and aroma earlier than other varieties. Its globe-shaped fruit is perfect for slicing on sandwiches and for salads. These tomatoes need at least one inch (2.5 cm) of water per week and prefer six hours or more of direct sun each day.

YELLOW BRANDYWINE TOMATO
90 days. Superbly rich and delicious-tasting large fruit, the
golden variety gives good yields and, in our opinion, the fruit are better tasting than Pink Brandywine. Large potato-leaf plants are very sturdy and deep green. This heirloom is delicious any way you eat it!

BLACK CHERRY TOMATO
75 days. Beautiful black cherries look like large, dusky purple-brown grapes; they have that rich flavor that makes black tomatoes famous. Large vines yield very well;
very unique and delicious

OXHEART TOMATO
Oxheart tomatoes grown in this country for many years are relatively unknown. Called "Rostova" may be the best tasting tomato of all. Their deep pink heart-shaped fruits have a sweet, rich, complex flavor and are very meaty while still being juicy. Production is excellent and the tomatoes are simply beautiful, but the intense tomato flavor really makes this one special. Originally brought over from Russia and also known as "Sunset's Red Horizon" these heirloom tomatoes vary between 8 to 14 ozs. Indeterminate. 85 days

SAN DIAGO PASTE TOMATO
Determinate hybrid producing 30 scarlet to red 2-1/2 oz. fruits that began ripening during the third week of July. Most ripening by Aug. 10.  Will not succumb to early blight.  Fruits are oval-shaped and resist cracking or green shoulders. 64 days

GREEN ZEBRA TOMATO
Characteristic dark green and yellow stripes and simultaneous sweet and tangy taste have made it a favorite with chefs and restaurateurs. Technically, it is not an heirloom, since its history is not quite long enough yet. Green Zebra is not only tasty but it is unusual. It brightens up salads and other dishes. Not an heirloom, since its history is not quite long enough yet. Green Zebra is not only tasty but it is unusual. It does brightens up salads and other dishes. 75 days

PAUL ROBESON TOMATO
This luxurious tomato is named for Paul Robeson (1898-1976), the elegant, renowned and charismatic operatic singer, law school graduate, champion athlete, film star, stage actor, and boundlessly brave champion of civil and personal rights throughout the world. This marvelous plant will give you its perfect 3"- 4" fruit in only 65 days from planting. Incredible; a symphony. I do believe this is the finest tomato in existence

AMISH PASTE TOMATO
First listed in the 1987 SSE Yearbook by Thane Earl of Whitewater, Wisconsin. Commercialized by Tom Hauch of Heirloom Seeds, who acquired it from the Amish near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Bright red 8-12 ounce fruits vary in shape from oxheart to rounded plum. Delicious flesh is juicy and meaty, excellent for sauce or fresh eating. One of Slow Food USA’s Ark of Taste varieties. Indeterminate, 85 days from transplant.

ORANGE BANANA PASTE TOMATO
80-85 days. Unique, orange, banana-shaped paste tomatoes that are bursting with fruity sweetness. Perfect for drying, canning, and paste. Also delicious fresh and great for specialty markets. Orange color is rare in paste tomatoes.

HONEY DROP CHERRY TOMATO
62 days. OP. Indet. Very sweet and juicy with a fruity flavor, this little cherry tomato is early and productive. Just terrific for snacking, the light honey colored fruits will keep you coming back for more. A new introduction from Crabapple Farm in Chesterfield, Ma. who found it growing as a sport in their tomato patch and selected it.

BOBCAT TOMATO
Beautiful, firm beefsteak tomatoes on a determinate plant. This hybrid sets juicy red tomatoes of uniform shape and size. Average weight is around 10 oz. Our trials staff love this tomato as do many of our customers. Maturity approximately 68 days after transplanting.

BIG BEEF TOMATO
The Big Beef Hybrid Tomato is the finest all-around tomato yet developed for home gardening. 1994 AAS Winner! It is extra meaty with a real "homegrown" flavor and just the right balance of sugars and acids. Produces extra large, "beefy" fruit that average 10-12 oz. in most growing areas. Fruit shape is deep oblate to globe. Large vigorous plants are quite manageable when staked or grown in large cages. Yield large fruits high up on the vine and keep producing award-winning size fruit until a killing frost. Resistant to such diseases as verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt, fusarium wilt race 1 and race 2, alternaria stern canker, stemphylium (gray leaf spot), nematodes (root knot) and tobacco mosaic virus. These often kill the Beefsteak. Bred to yield attractive, extra-smooth fruit in high numbers. Only tomato to receive the 1994 AAS award!
